CASE STUDY

EXAMPLE: TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS COMPANY

INITIAL SITUATION
‘Zippel’ was founded on 1 April 1876 by August Zippel as a cross-border haulier with horse-drawn carts. Today, the owner-managed transport and logistics company Konrad Zippel Spediteur GmbH & Co. KG specialises in container traffic, both by rail and by road. With over 200 highly skilled staff, extensive business sector expertise and a motor pool of more than 60 vehicles, Zippel Group can cater to all types of customer requests, including for complex transport projects between major European commercial centres and German sea ports. Remarkably, Zippel has an excellent sustainability track record in economic, environmental and social terms. On 29 April 2019, the Westhafen harbour in Berlin provided the backdrop for commissioning three new Scania R410 with compressed natural gas propulsion (CNG), an occasion that was attended by Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure Andreas Scheuer. As a result, the fleet of gas-propelled trucks is now seven environmentally friendly vehicles strong. With that day, Zippel Group also became the official 45th Safety Partner of the ‘Aktion Abbiegeassistent’ (Campaign Turning Assistant). Find out more about Zippel here: www.zippel24.com.

CHALLENGE
Zippel would like for the safety technology of its vehicle fleet to continue reflecting its corporate values, in addition to meeting the standards expected of a safety partner for the ‘Aktion Abbiegeassistent’ (Campaign Turning Assistant). Last not least, the company would like to offer attractive work places for professional drivers.

SOLUTION
The managing partners of Zippel Group, Axel Plaß and Axel Kröger, decided to successively install turn assistants in each vehicle of their fleet. The company already had a long-standing business relationship with LUIS Technology. Zippel’s preferred tractor truck supplier, Scania, is another LUIS partner. Fitting Zippel vehicles with the LUIS TURN DETECT® turn assistant was the obvious solution. Driver Martin Lorenz is very pleased with the new technology, which integrates cameras and image analysis software. He explains: ‘The new turn assistant helps me in everyday situations. I am very pleased with it.’ The Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure praised the initiative, adding ‘Zippel, by the way, funded this measure by themselves.’ Indeed, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure’s subsidy funds had been exhausted in a matter of days. The turn assistant has in the meantime been rolled out in Zippel’s entire vehicle fleet. All Zippel drivers now enjoy enhanced safety and peace of mind while driving.
